An aneurysm is a weak, ballooning stretch of a brain artery. Around three in a hundred adults have one, and the great majority stay quiet, so the real problem is telling apart the few that need treating from the many that don't.
What actually drives the risk
When one does rupture it causes a subarachnoid haemorrhage, which is often fatal, so the stakes on that judgement are high. But size on its own is a poor guide.
What matters is the shape, where it sits, and how blood moves through it. Reconstructing the aneurysm in 3D and modelling the flow gives a fuller, measured picture of how it formed and how likely it is to rupture than a diameter ever could.
